B6: Discuss the importance of teaching art as a core subject. Why is it important to ensure that there is time set aside in the curriculum, resources (teachers with art background, supplies, community resources) and space provided for art as a separate subject?
Art and creativity to me is a fundamental part of learning that can aid in many aspects of ones life. As a teacher I would want to help, guide and support my art students to learn something about themselves by their last day of art class.
Art can be expressed in many different mediums and formats. It is a way to access and unleash the utility of all five humanistic senses. It can be visually sensitive, audibly sensitive through the method of sound, rhythm, and music. Art can be wearable and functional. It can be written and read through literature and even tasted with culinary. Art can satisfy all the five senses through which we live our lives, so essentially we should live in this world through artistic, imaginative, and creative ways to satisfy a crucial part of ourselves. So it only makes sense to allow room for it in almost every curriculum. It is also important to ensure that this area of expertise is carried out and presented to the students by a teacher who knows a lot on the subject of art. Aside from the fact that every child is unique in their learning, a teacher who has a good grasp on a general way of how they think and learn would be essential to execute an effective curriculum
