B10: Discuss the relationship between popular culture and art. Why is it important to provide children with a range of media from traditional/historic media to contemporary/popular art media?
Pop culture is what students will be exposed to and engage in, so therefore most will take an interest in what is popular in their culture; movies, fashion, language, music, all of which contribute greatly to what art they decide to make. Since what they are exposed to in their enviroment will reflect in their creations artistically. Most decades appear to display a popular culture fad. As of today a dominant fad in pop culture is an “80s theme” Most fashions are based out of fashions from the 80’s, popular music is being based from 80’s sounding music etc. I’ve also noticed that the use of color on tv and advertisments, fashion, and cover art are also colors that were popular in the 80’s: bright, bold, clashing colors. So to raise a child in today’s culture and having them be purely exposed to current pop culture wouldn’t give them much exploration into the world of art. A person needs to be exposed to the different art styles, artists, fashions, trends, etc that were popular before today. That way, a wider range of influences and ideas would derive from all ages of time, to perhaps create artwork that has a major significances and differences to the artwork around them.
